Buttock augmentation

Buttock Augmentation and Body Contouring

Over the last few years, we have become increasingly aware of our bodies, in particular our buttocks. Many people who are overweight, genetically, habitually or after pregnancy, will try anything to lose weight and get back into shape. A small percentage of them are able to accomplish their goals through diet and exercise but for a large percent of them they find that their weight interferes with exercise and confounds the problem. With the advance in modern technology we now have the opportunity to enhance our bodies by way of cosmetic surgery. Body contouring and buttock augmentation have stepped to the foreground in the cosmetic surgery field creating a safe solution for those of us suffering from these body issues.

Buttock reshaping and augmentation procedures alter and improve the appearance of the male and female buttocks and has become popular especially in big cities like Rio de Janeiro and Los Angeles. Patients may seek to enhance buttock shape with liposuction, buttock lift, buttock implants or fat transfer procedures. It is important to realise the buttock reshaping surgery should address the whole back, flanks, hip and thigh as one unit and can in fact be seen as a body contouring procedure. The function of the buttock musculature in stability and gait is an important consideration and often has an impact on the type of procedure chosen. The results of such a surgery are that of more harmonious buttocks, with the desired shape and volume, and a better and perkier appearance.

Buttock augmentation is done in two ways:

Fat transfer: It is a small invasive procedure that involves fat being taken from another part of your body, purifying it and transplanting it into the buttock area to look as natural as possible for the optimal cosmetic effect. It is usually done under general anaesthetic as a day case. The recovery time is quick and less painful than buttock implants. Full activities may be resumed within 7 – 10 days.
Buttock Implants: It is a bigger operation but gives you permanent results. It involves a 5-7cm single incision is placed over the tailbone in the midline. Through this incision the buttock muscle (gluteus maximus) is identified and dissected to create a pocket just large enough for the implant. The implant will be inserted and positioned to look natural. The patient will require to stay in hospital overnight and pain medications are prescribed to help with the discomfort. Some patients will require drains overnight. There is usually minor swelling and bruising after surgery but results will immediately be visible. The procedure is done under general anaesthesia or/and epidural anaesthetics. After the surgery the patient may be uncomfortable for the first few days and it is advisable that someone will be with the person for a few days just to help get out of bed, prepare meals, etc. It will take few days before the patient find it more comfortable to walk about and get back to daily activities. The dressing should remain dry and intact for few days. The patient will be reviewed at the clinic 7 days after surgery for wound and implant check. After four weeks, full activities may be resumed.
Body contouring is the combination of tummy tuck, liposuction, inner thigh, and buttock lifts. As mentioned earlier on, buttock augmentation normally goes hand in hand with some form of body contouring. The procedure is done under general anaesthetic in a hospital and takes 4-6 hours depending on its complexity. As with any surgery, scars will be present after the procedure. Of course, the more skin that is removed, the more extensive the scaring will be. The scars are however small and normally well hidden. After the surgery there will probably be some swelling and discomfort and normally activities can be resumed within about 2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the surgery.
