Eye Lift Surgery

If there is one body part that is highly exposed to daily stress and strain, that would be the eyes. Because of this and by natural aging as well, your eyes form eye bags and your eyelids tend to sag and droop. This condition obstructs your vision and makes you look older than you really are. This can be corrected by undergoing Eye Lift Surgery.

Eye lift surgery also known as blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reduces eye bags and removes excess fatty tissues, skin and muscle from the eyelids. It normally takes two hours to perform. The effects of an Eye Lift Surgery can last from five years to a lifetime, it will not stop your eyes from aging nor will it get rid of the dark circles under the eyes or other facial wrinkles. You will have to undergo other cosmetic procedures like laser resurfacing or forehead lifts for all those other problems.

The operation is required to be administered with anesthesia. Local anesthesia coupled with oral sedation is the most common practice however, if the procedure is done at a hospital or surgical center, the patient will most likely receive intravenous sedation.

For the upper eyelids, incisions are done following the natural lines of your eyelids where the doctor will separate the skin from the tissue in order to remove the excess fat, skin and muscle. Incisions are then closed using sutures that will have to remain for three to six days.

Moving on to the lower eyelids or eye bags, most doctors employ the transconjunctival technique in removing the fat. The incision is made inside the eyelid hence there is no visible cut after the surgery. The other technique is called the transcutaneous technique, which cuts along the eyelash margin. The incision line is visible but normally fades after a short period of time. One can combine this procedure with laser resurfacing to obscure any post-operation scar.

Prior to deciding to have an Eye Lift Surgery, you have to be prepared for several situations that may arise post-operation. Expect that you have to stay at home and to limit your activities for a couple or more days so that your newly operated eyelids can heal and recover. You cannot drive yourself home after the surgery so you have to ask a friend or a family member to be with you from the time of surgery until you are completely healed. Dry eyes are a normal side effect but if the condition lasts more than two weeks, you have to contact your doctor. You should also have ice packs, gauze pads, eye drops, clean towels and your prescribed painkillers readily accessible for faster recovery and to avoid further infection. You should also avoid intake of Advil, Motrin, Naproxen, Aleve, and Aspirin because of the increased risk of bleeding.
