Breast Lift Surgery-What you need to know

After pregnancy and with the ageing process, most women may experience the sagging and softening of their breasts.  Breastfeeding or weight loss can be other reasons for breast displacement and flattening.  With time these changes become more noticeable and this is where breast lift surgery could be the solution to reshape and restructure your breasts.  Breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is designed to restructure the breasts in such a way so as to reshape and improve the position of the breasts without reducing their size.  This procedure can be conducted together with either breast enlargement or breast reduction procedures.  The whole idea behind breast lift surgery is to give it a youthful appearance by removing excess skin, reshaping the breast tissue and repositioning the nipple.

A common misunderstanding which a lot of women seem to have about mastopexy is that they believe breast lift surgery will make their breast look bigger and fuller.  This is a clear misconception since breast lift surgery in no way increases the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breasts.  If you want to make your breasts look bigger or smaller, you need to consider alternative techniques like breast augmentation or breast reduction.

Like any form of surgery, breast lift surgery comes with its own share of risks and side effects with one of them being post surgery scars.  While surgeons strive for the best aesthetic outcomes, there are some rare cases where the appearance of the scars may persist over some years.  However, prior to proceeding with the breast lift surgery, you and your surgeon will decide together where is the most appropriate place for the incision.

Basically, breast lift surgery involves three main types of incisions and patients should be prepared to deal with the scar for some time.  The three types of scars commonly used in this form of surgery are the donut shaped scar around the nipple areola, lollipop scar and the traditional anchor shaped scar.

In the case of breast lift surgery, the risk of losing soft tissue is minimal since less soft tissue is displaced as opposed during a reduction mammaplasty.  Under some circumstances where the simple readjustment of the tissues alone are not sufficient, the breast lift surgery can be combined with a small breast implant in order to ensure fullness, firmness and perfect shape of the breasts.

As a note of caution, patients should bear in mind that it is highly recommended that they should stop smoking two months prior and after surgery in order to make the healing process quicker as well to reduce the chances of post surgery bleeding, long term scarring and infections.  Patients will be required to take complete rest for about 10 to 15 days in order to allow for complete healing and recovery.
