Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction-What you need to know

As a man, you may notice that you have overly large breasts-a condition commonly referred to as gynaecomastia-if you are wondering how to get rid of those male breasts, one way of doing so is through breast reduction.  The reason why breast reduction is the only way to reduce the breast tissue is because it is not excess fat which can be reduced with exercise.  Hence, the only way to remove this breast tissue is through surgery.

While there is no known cause for gynaecomastia, it is generally agreed that in some cases it is caused by the intake of certain drugs and medicine while in most cases it is a hormonal phenomenon whereby at the time of puberty there is an excess of the female hormone called oestrogen.  This anomaly can then make male breast appear bigger than normal; while in most cases both breasts are larger, there are some instances where only one breast is larger.

If you are conscious about your bigger than normal breasts, then you can have recourse to surgery whereby the excess breast tissue is removed thereby making you look good physically as well as feel good psychologically.  The whole process of surgery involves removing glandular tissue and fat from the breasts and in some cases excess skin can also be removed thereby making your chest look flatter, firmer and more contoured.

Regarding the surgery, the fat and breast tissue can either be excised or liposuctioned.  If the breast enlargement is due to an excess glandular tissue, then an incision is necessary whereby an incision is made in a less risky area around the areola and working through the cut, the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin is removed around the areola and from the sides and bottom of the breasts.

On the other hand, liposuction is used if the gynaecomastia is caused due to excess fatty tissues.  In the case of liposuction, the incision is made either in the armpit or at the edge of the areola and with the help of a cannula, the fat is broken down and suctioned out.

Following the surgery, scarring is expected to be minimal and healing period will depend on the person’s healing tendencies.  It is expected that patients will expect some discomfort right after surgery which can nevertheless be dealt with the help of medication.  However all symptoms and discomfort will subside after a week provided that the individual’s normal day to day activities and work does not involve heavy lifting and work which can cause strain on the incision.  Scars and redness are expected to disappear with time and this also depends on the individual’s type of skin.

Right after the surgery, the patient will be required to wear a compression garment for some weeks in order to limit bruising and swelling, as well as too much stretching of the skin.  Doctors recommend some gentle walking and exercising post surgery so as to reduce swelling and the thickening of scars.
